This year in the northern hemisphere September 21 is the last day of Summer; September 22 is the first day of Autumn—the Autumn equinox that signals the beginning of Fall. For those in the southern hemisphere it is the Spring equinox. It is the point where there is exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness at the equator. In both hemispheres it coincides with cultural events, religious observances and customs.
