Too Gentle to Live Among Wolves?

As I responded to the comments left on yesterday’s post , I remembered a poem by James Kavanaugh that my ex-wife often told me was me. I just re-read it and am wondering why I have become an insurance agent.

There are Men Too Gentle to Live Among Wolves

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who prey upon them with IBM eyes
And sell their hearts and guts for martinis at noon.
There are men too gentle for a savage world
Who dream instead of snow and children and Halloween
And wonder if the leaves will change their color soon.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who anoint them for burial with greedy claws
And murder them for a merchant's profit and gain.
There are men too gentle for a corporate world
Who dream instead of candied apples and ferris wheels
And pause to hear the distant whistle of a train.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who devour them with eager appetite and search
For other men to prey upon and suck their childhood dry.
There are men too gentle for an accountant's world
Who dream instead of Easter eggs and fragrant grass
And search for beauty in the mystery of the sky.

There are men too gentle to live among wolves
Who toss them like a lost and wounded dove.
Such gentle men are lonely in a merchant's world,
Unless they have a gentle one to love.

  1. Sometimes the gentleness of the Savior's love hides the power found in His Words. And sometimes we forget that we do not go in our strength, but in His mighty power. Enjoyed the poem - thanks. ec

  2. I wrote this on your previous day's post and it is goo for this one, too:

Nick, I know you too well to believe you can be happy selling insurance. If you can't find a church to pastor, strat a new one. I am sure people would folk to it because of who you are.

  4. And that's why you're truly a pastor/social worker and insurance is only going to help pay the bills in the interim.

    Happy Father's Day

  5. Nick, you're looking at it all wrong. Selling insurance is very helpful to people. Why look at the everyday disasters; if those people didn't have some kind of insurance they'd be out everything. Sales is no different than being a preacher in my opinion. You sell people on salvation and the teachings of Christ and insurance you sell them on the protection they need. Don't be too hard on yourself. Believe in what you do.

  6. Nick, my ex-husband was a life insurance agent and made a great deal of money. Unfortunately, he started seeing everyone as if they were potential marks. That is partly why he is no longer my husband.
