Sniper!

With the temperatures remaining the high 70s (F) and the sun shining brightly, I drove down to the Louisville Riverfront after worship this morning. (See the photograph above of one of the several Riverfront walkways).

Thus I didn’t get home until about 12:45 p.m. A check of my phone messages indicated that my mother had been telephoning at about three minute intervals. Crisis? Yes, in a way.

It seems that Kentuckiana has its own, home-grown (?) terrorist. Around 12:30 a.m. this morning someone began shooting at cars on Interstate-65 near Seymour, in southern Indiana, which is about 55 miles north of Louisville. My mother knows that there is a church in Seymour that is part of the Kentuckiana Association of the United Church of Christ, of which I a the moderator, and that I habitually visit different Association congregations on Sundays. She was concerned that I was a victim of this sniper.

According to the news reports I’ve been able to access, at least four vehicles were hit by gunfire. One person is dead.

With so much violence and death in the world, I suppose it was just a matter of time before such random and senseless murder hit close to my home.

When will it end? I fear the answer is “never.”

  1. Fer cryin' out loud. Please stay safe. But, you know, with our governmnet yelling FEAR at us all the time, they've got people so riled up. The pols just want to get re-elected, or a buy-in for an unnecessary war. But the result is more people dead.

    Such a shame.

  2. I'm not sure that things are any worse now than they've ever been (not that that's much comfort). We've got nearly 300 million people in this country now- there's bound to be a few violent dumbasses in the mix, and they're going to get the news coverage.

You're far more likely to lose your life or property in a car crash than to crime or terrorism, but that's not the sexy the sort of issue politicians like to get behind.

  4. SQUIRL: Fear can be a great motivator. Maybe that’s why the Bible has God saying over and over, “Be not afraid.”

THOMAS: I thank that humankind has always experienced violence in various forms. As I shall update later in today’s blog post, the sniper turned out to be a troubled 17-year-old kid. I suspect that he is as much a victim of our society as those whom he shot.

RHAPSODY: Yes, creepy; especially disturbing since the sniper took out his anger on unknown folks driving along the Interstate.
