Mimi Farina and Richard Farina with Pete Seeger

Ever so often one encounters an unexpected gem on the Internet. To me, this video of Richard and Mimi Farina singing Pack Up Your Sorrows is one such gem.

I encountered the music of Richard Farina and his wife Mimi (the sister of Joan Baez) during my early years at college. Then I became entranced by his book about college life in the sixties, Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me, which I admit that I've used as the title of more than one sermon.

Unfortunately, the world lost Richard shorty after the publication that book. On April 30, 1966, two days after the publication of Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me, Richard took a short motorcycle ride during the twenty-first birthday party for his wife, Mimi. The motorcycle crashed and his was killed instantly at the age of 29.

The world lost Mimi to cancer on July 18, 2001.

They were two very special human beings.

  1. Nice music, Nick. Thanks for posting..

I was just reading some of the sites you linked to.. (another day off, so I have lots of time to read).. and it just seems that Mimi's life was so sad. I'm sure she did not think of it like that... but oh my, did she have more than her fair share or what?

    /sigh

  2. PEANUT: You are most welcome. I agree that Mimi's life was certainly one of sorrow; yet she gave so much of herself to others that her life was magnificent and beneficent. I find it a shame that not too many people even know of her--or of Richard.
