A Confession

Last night I dialed a telephone number. It wasn't until I put the "phone" to my ear that I realized that I hadn't dialed the number on the phone but on the remote to the satellite dish. I felt mortified! How could I do something so absurd and irrational? Am I losing my mind? Has the solitary isolation I have experienced over the past couple of months since being exiled from my home begun to affect my rationality?

OK, so I over reacted to a simple slip of attention. Thus I laughed about my dialing the remote instead of the phone. I shared my humorous goof with my mother when I telephoned her (dialing the phone and not the remote) this afternoon. Can you imagine my surprise when she told me she has done the same thing - several times! So could my action be attributable to my age or heredity?

My response: I really don't care. It's a funny story and that's it. And it is reassuring that someone else has done the same thing!

Speaking on my mother, her stay in the rehab center is about over. She has been challenged by the powers to be to demonstrate that she is capable of living on her own by May 1 or end up in either a nursing home or assisted living mini-home. I am unsure about the details: Mom gives me one version and my sister gives me another. I pray Mom is able to return to her house. That's what she wants and I sincerely believe that, with appropriate support, she can live here.

  1. Just a few hours ago I tried to use my cell phone as a computer mouse. Needless to say, it didn't work very well. You are not alone, Nick, and I don't think it has anything to do with age or heredity. I think we have too many gadgets around these days and we are bound to get them confused once in awhile. :)

  2. Didn't your mother once store a box matches in the freezer because it was the same size as frozen vegetables? And didn't you once deposit your paycheck into your aunt's estate account and not realize it for months? See, I remember your stories. Dialing on the remote was hereditary. You are your mother's son.

  3. That's the sort of thing that never used to happen when phones had dials and were attached to the wall.

  4. So, did you reach some TV star when you used that new-fangled phone? ;)

  5. Don't feel bad. I've answered the phone when the microwave timer has beeped! I usually blame the stress in my life for those kinds of goof-ups.

  6. We all pull stuff like that. Stress, like tshsmom said, does that to you. And you've had plenty of stress lately.

Good luck with getting your mom home.

  7. I'll keep your mom in my thoughts and hope it all works out for the best.

I give new meaning to the word scatterbrained these days.

I go to the kitchen to refill my coffee cup. While I'm there, I wash a few dishes, get something out of the freezer, let the cats in or out, and eventually head back for our bed/sitting room - without the coffee.

    Later, rinse, repeat.

Hope you're having a great weekend.

Our kittens' eyes are open and they're all out of their box and running around the house and under our feet.

Don't worry Nick. I think we have all done something that silly.

  10. Ha! Susie's funny!

My grandmother did the exact same thing, Nick. She's in her eighties, but there's not a thing wrong with her mind. She is as sharp as a tack. I wouldn't sweat it, Nick. Lots of people do funny things like that sometimes.

I hope your mom gets to come home.

  11. Nick, this is why I tie a string to my mind ... so I always know where it is.

  12. When I do something like that I always glance around to see if anyone saw what I did. Of course I always tell on myself and laugh, that's part of the fun of life. ec
