Today Isn’t Really About…

Today, July 4th, isn’t really about fireworks, parades, picnics and beer. It’s about this:

Several years ago I had a professor and friend who said he re-reads the Declaration of Independence every July 4th, no matter how else he celebrates the U.S.A.’s National Holiday. Since then I, too, have re-read it each 4th of July. It is a powerful reminder of what one may otherwise forget.

    I love being an American! I still have the Preamble memorized from the fourth grade. Periodically, I'll sing it -schoolhouse rock style- to the kids.

    A timely reminder, Nick. I agree, it should be read AT LEAST once a year and the 4th is a fitting day to do so. Thanks to your link, I just re-read it myself. Perhaps I need to provide a permanent link to it on my blog; for myself and others.

    I still cry when the flags pass by at parades...

  10. I’m back for another comment. The River Front fireworks display just ended. I’m sure you could see at least part of it from your “hill top” house. As I drove home I realized how much I love the parades, picnics, and fireworks of the 4th of July. But the beer drinkers and drunks really bother me as I become older. I wish they would just stay off the streets and out of the crowds so they would not spoil the day for others.

  11. I think it's lovely to read about the patriotism of one's fellow countrymen. We show our patriotism on Australia Day, too. It's nice to belong, isn't it?

    And it's lovely to think we're generous enough to allow displaced people, refugees, etc from other parts of the world to come and live in our country so that they may also share in the patriotism and other good things we take for granted.

  12. this is gonna be a long comment, but since its been sometime i caught with you, i am sure u will not be that bored.

    my first interest in the DoI was when i saw "national treasure" and there is this dialogue that cage says "...in pursuit of happiness.... people dont talk like that anymore"

    the DoI if i may, is a single and powerful piece of paper, because it was inked by the vision of those individuals who had the heart of true men, and who gave everything to what they beleived "that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness"

    What an idealogy ... and where are we on it..??

  14. It's interesting of what the fireworks really represent, isn't it? BBQ's and parties have taken place of the tragedies that once occured, as a result of war. Interestingly enough, Thanksgiving is one of those occasions where I find myself saying, "Why are we doing this?" But that's a whole other' story in itself!
