Protecting Our Children from Sexual Predators

My college buddy, Rudy, who a retried FBI agent, emailed me a web site, Family Watchdog that was developed by John Walsh from Americas Most Wanted.

Remember: you may click on any graphic to enlarge it.

When you visit Family Watchdog you may enter your address. A map will pop up with your house as a small icon around which are red, blue and green dots which indicate convicted sexual offenders.

The above map is centered on my home. The dots do not show on this graphic due to their being hyperlinks that would not copy to the image. The legend to the left of the map shows what the colors of the dots indicate.

When you click on these dots a picture of a criminal will appear with his or her home address and the description of the crime he or she has committed. You may also type in the name of a person. If that individual has been convicted of a sexual offense, the site will provide information as below.

The above is what the site provides about my ex-father-in-law, convicted of incest, who sexually abused each of his four daughters from the time they were preschoolers until they left his home. I wrote much more about this in my blog post HERE.

  2. Thanks for the link to the Family Watchdog Site.

It's got to be kind of eerie to find your ex-father-in-law's photo and info there on this site.

I'm still sad about what happened to your ex-wife, her sisters, and all the other young people who have been violated in this way...

  3. I linked as suggested.

And noted the do no harm, teach love, not hate banner.

I struggle to square the circle.

  4. It is sad but necessary that we must have offenders’ registers and sites like John Walsh’s.

  5. Wonderful post Nick...so very sad and tragic that it's needed though.

  6. Good info, thank you for posting it. It is a fine line trying to teach my daughter to protect herself and speak up without scaring the hell out of her

  7. I'm too scared to try that site...I can only imagine how many sex offenders are in this area...especially as there's an old run down hotel two blocks away.

  8. I’m shocked. I went to the website, put in my address, and counted 14 convicted sex criminals within about 2 miles of my home. Is nowhere safe from them?

  9. Nick,as a retired corrections officer I had to deal with these fine specimens way to many times. It was all I could do to keep from not letting any harm come to them while they were in our custody.

  11. I love your posting this, Sir Nick. I have checked this site more times than I dare to admit. Growing up with incest all around me made me over protective, I guess.

  14. It's amazing how prevelant this is in our society. And we still have found no successful way to deal with it. Also, the watchdog site can only tell you about the criminals who actually are following their requirements and register their whereabouts. (Imagine that, criminals who don't follow the law) Many move and don't report their new address. Some claim a family's address as a permenant address while they actually live somewhere else. Then add the one's that haven't been caught yet. Ok, my kids are playing inside tomorrow.

  18. This is what that African proverb "It takes a village to raise a child" was talking about; everybody has to keep an eye on everyone's children.

  19. These first 2 posts are so so emotional to me . I work with these children many times and also rescue pets so I thank you for your
Tom comment. I was able to access him through your side links. Is Alex feeling well and Alex's human?

  20. Posts like this make me hyperventilate Nick, because I know what it's like. If only we had watchdog sites like this here in the UK. The law here seems to be on the side of the paedophile although there are a lot of people campaigning for Sarah's Law (based on Megan's Law in America). As far as I am concerned anyone who hurts a child does not deserve to live, I did a post recently on this very subject.
