Wednesday Coffeehouse: Simon and Garfunkel

SPECIAL REQUEST: Please keep Alex in your hearts and prayers. The little fellow has begun licking the hair from his tummy and the underside of his tail. We have a vet’s appointment for him tomorrow morning. (By telephone this morning Alex’s vet suggested that his actions are probably related to the allergies he has had since he was a kitten). ~ Nick, 9:55 a.m., 27 August, 2008

Today we welcome to the Coffee House the legendary Simon and Garfunkel!

The music of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel transports my mind to some of the most memorable—and romantic—times of my college days.Placing a S. & G. LP on my turntable, diming the lights in my apartment, and snuggling with a date always led to marvelous moments. I especially remember Susan (one of four Susans I dated that year) and the first time we both heard this first song:

Susan

  2. I saw them at the Red Rooster in Latrobe Greensburg area in the early 60's I think they were called Tom and Gerry then for a brief time sk

  4. I like those guys and really like Simons later music.
Glad those songs brought bad some fond memories for you Nick.
One of four Susan, sounds like your record got scratched.
I have a nephew who dated several girls with the same name and I once ask him if that name was a prequestite before he would ask them on a date. Peace

  5. I have always loved their music. So many memories associated with that sound...

One of my favorite songs of theirs is "America".

Three "Susans" in one year??? At least you didn't have to worry about calling your date by the wrong name.

  7. Akelamalu: Thank you. They brought a myriad of memories back to me, too.

i beati: I’ve never seen them in person. I really wish I had!

Queenie: Your husband has excellent taste! Is there a genre of S & G songs you like best—fast, slow, rock, etc.?

  8. Lady Di Tn: I called my junior year at the University of Kentucky The Year of the Susans. Actually, only two were really Susan; one was Su and another was Suzanne. I have no idea how I ended up knowing all of them at the same time! Since were wall about the same age, perhaps Susan was a popular name in the years in which they were born.

Carol: Thank you for thinking about the furball. Other than his licking the hairs odd his underside, he acts perfectly OK, perfectly Alex.

The problem with all of those Susans it that I dated them not only in the same year, but at the same time. And, two of the Susans were roommates. I didn’t know that when I began dating them!

  9. Nick, Thank you for the Simon and Garfunkle mini concerts. I use to sing "Bridge over troubled waters" a lot when I was a teenager.

  15. I love Simon and Garfunkel. I had to power my way through so I can get into work. I will listen later.

I hope all is well with the little furball. I think you need to put him in one of the cones you normally see a dog wear. Poor Alex.

Have a great day. I know it was raining in Lexington, I hope the weather has been better where you are.
