Today is Groundhog Day. Supposedly we shall learn how much longer we shall have to endure
winter weather. I understand that Groundhog Day developed in Pennsylvania based upon the German settlers celebration of Candlemas. Through the years the legend grew that we could tell how long we will have to endure winter based upon whether or not this little firry creature see its shadow. [Scientifically, the reality of February 2nd is that it is a "cross-quarter" day, about halfway between the winter solstice in December and the vernal equinox in March] February 2nd is celebrated in some cultures as the mid point of winter.I really don’t care if today Punxsutawney Phil or Wiarton Willie or Pothole Pete saw their shadows or not! All I care about is that one more day has passed until Spring is really here!
Looking forward to spring myself, it's my favorite season - one of life and renewal. Speaking of Groundhog Day, did you ever see the movie by that title? One of my favorites - a really jerk of a newscaster kept reliving Groundhog Day until he got it right - anyway, I enjoyed it. ec
