I Don’t Care What Punxsutawney Phil Saw

Yesterday the high temperature was a warm 57 degrees F here in Louisville—well, "warm" for February, I should say. In the afternoon, I had a conversation with a store clerk and another customer and we three agreed that we wish yesterday was March 1 rather than February 1 because we would be four weeks closer to a real Spring. I look forward to Spring!

Today is Groundhog Day. Supposedly we shall learn how much longer we shall have to endure winter weather. I understand that Groundhog Day developed in Pennsylvania based upon the German settlers celebration of Candlemas. Through the years the legend grew that we could tell how long we will have to endure winter based upon whether or not this little firry creature see its shadow. [Scientifically, the reality of February 2nd is that it is a "cross-quarter" day, about halfway between the winter solstice in December and the vernal equinox in March] February 2nd is celebrated in some cultures as the mid point of winter.

I really don’t care if today Punxsutawney Phil or Wiarton Willie or Pothole Pete saw their shadows or not! All I care about is that one more day has passed until Spring is really here!
