Unemployed Blogger?

I have been tempted to remove the “Unemployed Blogger” ribbon from the sidebar of this blog. However, although I have been working now for two days, I am uncertain as to whether or not I am “employed.”

After I arrived Tuesday morning, I signed (after meticulously reading the whole thing) a third contract with Liberty National Life Insurance Company. This third contract that I signed was different than the other two I had previously signed: I was told that the company had “made some policy changes.” This contract made it very obvious that I am not an employee of the company. I am not even an “agent.” I am an “agency.” Can someone explain to me what it means for me to be an “agency?”

This evening I checked my profile on the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s Insurance Commission website. Hallelujah! The status of my two insurance agent’s licenses was changed from “pending” to “active” with an effective date of May 30! I am now recognized by the government as an insurance agent.

~P.S.—I’ll post Monday’s jokes soon. I promise!

  1. Congratulations!

But be careful: it sounds like they might have made you an "independent contractor." That might mean you are responsible for keeping your taxes squared with the IRS, and for paying the SS tax yourself. Check your first pay stub, and if they aren't withholding taxes, act quickly so you aren't hit with a penalty.

  4. Woo-hoo! I'm glad your license is finally good to go. That sucks that you're not "employed" by them. I hope it all works out great for you, though!

  5. Good to hear you are finally getting those licenses.

Nick, I rather think that you have allowed your trusting nature to again get yourself screwed. This company sounds like very bad news.
