Later, after a couple hours blogging, I clicked off my browser and almost fell out of my chair when I was confronted by Alex staring at me from my computer screen. I had forgotten that I had made a photograph of him into my desk top wallpaper!
Then I wondered, “How many people create a computer desktop using a photograph of their cat?” That question led me to the joke in my last Too Bad It’s Monday humor about whether or not a person is owned by their cat. So, I went through the questions. The questions that I answered yes to are marked in blue:
Do you select your friends based on how well your cats like them?
Does your desire to collect cats intensify during times of stress?
Do you buy more than 50 pounds of cat litter a month?
Do you scoop out the litter box after each use?
Do you wait at the box with the scoop in your hand?
Do you think it's cute when your cat swings on the drapes or licks the butter?
Do you admit to non-cat owners how many cats you really have?
Do you sleep in the same position all night because it annoys your cats when you move?
Do you kiss your cat on the lips?
Do you feed your cat tidbits from the table with your fork?
Does your cat sit at the table (or ON the table) when you eat?
Does your cat sleep on your head? Do you like it?
Do you have more than four opened but rejected cans of cat food in the refrigerator?
Do you watch bad TV because the cat is sleeping on the remote?
Did you buy a video tape of fish swimming in an aquarium to entertain your cat?
Will you stand at the open door indefinitely in the freezing rain while your cat sniffs the door, deciding whether to go out or come in?
Would you rather spend a night at home with your cat than go out on a bad date?
Do you give your cat presents and a stocking at Christmas?
Do you spend more for your cat than you do for your spouse?
Do the Christmas cards you send out feature your cat sitting on Santa's lap?
Does your cat sign the card?
Do you put off making the bed until the cat gets up?
Does your cat eat out of cut crystal stemware because you both watched the same commercial on television?
Do you microwave your cat's food? Prepare it from scratch?
Do you climb out of bed over the headboard or footboard, so you won't disturb the sleeping cat?
At the store, do you pick up the cat food and kitty litter before you pick out anything for yourself?
Do you cook a special turkey for your cat on holidays?
Does your cat "insist" on a fancy Sunday breakfast consisting of an omelet made from eggs, milk, and salmon, halibut, or trout?
Do you have pictures of your cat in your wallet? Do you bring them out when your friends share pictures of their children? (Pollsters claim that 40 percent of cat owners carry their pet's pictures in their wallets.)
When people call to talk to you on the phone, do you insist that they say a few words to your cat as well?
Do you accept dates only with those who have a cat? If so, do you eventually double-date with the cats to see how they get along?
When someone new comes to your house, do you introduce your cat, by name, to them?
Below are a few bunch of photos demonstrating the above—and more:
And a movie staring Alex:
Love the movie :0)

i would like to be owned by alex
ReplyDeletehe is soooooooooo cute
You'll be happy to know that my next-door cubicle mate at work does, indeed, have a screen saver of his cats - all 5 of them!
ReplyDeleteNick,
ReplyDeleteLooks like you've got a true blue friend there. Alex, a great name for him. I rent and they don't allow pets; however, last evening I was sitting out on my patio and this friendly cat came up and sat on my lap. I was tempted to take him in. You have a nice blog, Nick... I'll be back!
The Bach
Hi Neighbor,
ReplyDeleteNick, I just saw you're just south of me a bit. I'm about 60 miles north of Indy in Purdue country.
The Bachelor at Wellington
POLGARA: I must make more Alex videos. Unfortunately, the best (funniest) Alex behaviors take place when I don’t have a camera around.
ReplyDeleteJODY: There are times—not many—when I would be happy is Alex bought someone else for a while.
DANA: hummmmm…so I ain’t as weird as it thought!
BACHELOR: Thanks for dropping by, Bach! Often, when Alex is outside cattin’ around, he spends time visiting my next door neighbors on their porch and deck. He also sits on my deck and harasses the dog who lives on the other side of me. Of course, the yards are separated by a very tall fence; Alex is a smart cat—the dog is very big.
This is no surprise. I think the readers of your blog have known for a very long time that Alex owns you. Loved the photographs and video!
ReplyDeleteLOL The same thing has happened to me when I've changed my screen. altho I have a dog right now, I've always had cats all my life....so I know..... ;-)
ReplyDeletePeace
Alex is a wonder! But, then, so are you.
ReplyDeleteCleopatra also likes to hesitate for long moments with the door open. I'm afraid we aren't as patient as you are. The video is wonderful! I laughed out loud when I saw Alex settling in for a nice rest at the open door. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by to wish me a happy. I will stop back by, when not at work to see all there is to see. I love my two girls. Angelina, a nonstandard munchkin and Isabelle and domestic short hair. I believe they are on my side bar. Thanks again Nick.
ReplyDeleteBACHELOR: If you’re 60 miles north of Indy from me, then that’s about 3 hours driving time. Not too bad.
ReplyDeleteCHINA GIRL: You’re right. Even I have admitted that Alex owns me, I supposed I’ve known that since he was a kitten.
ODAT: I was honestly and utterly astounded when I saw Alex’s face staring back at the screen. It’s not as if I could forget the furball while I am computing; he still sneaks up on me and sticks his claws into my body when he demands I do something for him.
ABBY: Thank you—I think.
KCINNOVA: Cleopatra sounds like a normal cat. Alex doesn’t always sit at the door looking out. Often he standing and moves his tail back and forth like a signal flag. I think he is determining if any of his cat buddies are outside before he decides to go out and cat around.
LU’: You are more than welcome! Please drop back anytime you wish. I’ll have a look at the pics of Angelina and Isabelle. I am intrigued by munchkins!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that as cat introductions go, you too, get introduced by name.
ReplyDeletewe are in danger of getting obsessed with our cats ...
ReplyDeleteYou've got a good room-mate there. I think that most humans can't compete with Alex and his entertaining ways.
ReplyDeleteWhen it's really cold out and Ms. Kitty thinks she wants to go outside, her paw does an automatic fast little shake as she approaches the door. Does Alex do that? It's so funny to watch and I know that she has no control over it.
he is indeed a great match for you - you see humor inall his unconditional demands hah ha mean while Evie is in a stare down contest to the left of my keyboard. How dare you type and not pet me ??
ReplyDeleteAlex did not want to go Outside, I think he just wanted to sit in the doorway for a while and look around out there!
ReplyDeleteps: My Mommie kisses me on the LIPS sometimes! Yuck.
I was thinking of my sister as I read a lot of those, both now and on Monday!
ReplyDeleteI remember speaking with you on the phone once, but this time when I heard your voice on the video, your accent reminded me so much of my uncle. Of course, he's from Louisville, too. He's lived in Boston since 1967 or 68 but the accent's still there. :-)
I enjoyed the photographs and movie about Alex. I enjoyed theM even though I am a dog person.
ReplyDeleteAlex is such a ham!
ReplyDeleteI am completely charmed by Alex.
ReplyDeleteI made a joke once on my site about ALMOST being a Cat Blogger because of all the photos I had posted about a Kitten that I was Kitten Sittin'.
Truth is, if my own Cat, Rumpleteaser, would love me the way she loves my husband, I WOULD be a Cat blogger.
Be blessed Nick!
Jen

Your puddy-tat is quite cute and adorable; in addition, Alex has something more-- A definite sort of dignity. The personality comes through....you are fortunate to have such a cat.
ReplyDeleteI have owned cats in my life. They can be just like dogs and shadow you wherever you go in the house; its a myth that cats like solitude.
oh, i'd say it's pretty mutual, the ownership thing between you.
ReplyDeletebesides, how could anyone not love such a good lookin' cat?
Yep - one of the best examples of cat ownership I have seen! ec
ReplyDeleteI have to confess. I AWWed quite a bit just there. I am owned by two kitties. One of which is sleeping underneath my desk chair.
ReplyDeleteCats are such good company!
ReplyDeleteHere's a little video you might like...
But don't let your cat watch it with you. :)

It takes quite a bit to bring tears to my old eyes, but those photographs and that movie did.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the photos ! And the wallpaper is a great idea too.
ReplyDeleteHow is Alex enjoying the warmer weather?
~Susan
Yup, you're owned by your cat all right! (So am I!)
ReplyDeleteI think that was cool as Alex looked up at you.
ReplyDeleteHullo Alex. If you want me to post you a glass cutter through the mail, just send me your address.
