Celebrating Earth Day 2009

For the beauty of the earth,
For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies,
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our grateful hymn of praise.

Time to plant trees
You're down on your knees
Time to plant trees
Near a swarm of bees
You plant a little tree
And it grows and grows
Or it may die in a winter's snow
Only God does know

I wrote the above poem when I was in the 4th grade. It won first place in an Arbor Day contest at Stephen Foster Elementary School here in Louisville. My prize was a young sappling to plant.

I watched that tree grow for more than twenty years, until a drunk driver plowed into the yard and the tree, killing it.

I've planted lots of trees and lots of rose bushes through the years, but that tree was my favorite.

But you know, no matter what, it really is a wonderful world. So today Alex and I are going to somehow plant another little tree to replace the one we lost over the weekend.

Have a blessed Earth Day!

  1. I loved your poem. We sort of get attached to trees ... I suppose they are a sort of stability through the seasons.

I was sad to see this local beauty go a couple of weeks ago too ..

  3. I also like your poem! Will Alex help to plant the tree by digging the hole with his claws?

  6. Love the poem Nick. What a shame about your tree after you nurtured it all that time. :(

  8. What a sweet little poem. That video was beautiful, too. I have a Norfolk Island Pine that was from my first Christmas with Ichabod. It's taller than both of us now and I'm always fighting to make sure we keep it.

    Happy Earth Day.
