Today (now yesterday)

I created this post at intervals throughout the day.

I sit here shirtless as I write this post. It’s almost 96° outside and over 80° inside. This morning I got quite ill from the heat. More about that later in this post.

Today is the 12th day of June—a day that for three fourths of my life has been a high point of every year. It was on this date in 1971 that my oldest son, Nicholas Lawrence Temple III, was born in Würtzburg, Germany.

It was on this date in 1975 that my youngest son, Robert Lawrence Temple II, was born in Louisville, Kentucky.

I still celebrate this day, in a way, although not with the grandness that I once did, since now I am estranged—not by my desire—from both of my sons. Yesterday I created these graphic images that I posted on Facebook to celebrate Nick and Rob’s birthday:

I don’t expect a response.

Recently I have been reading books written by two giants of train-of-thought literature, HenryMiller and Jack Kerouac. I wonder if reading their words has in any way influenced my own writing—probably not since I am so attuned to punctuation that I have don’t think I could create a run on sentence even if I tried. I have discovered that there is quite a similarity between their styles perhaps because both Miller’s Tropic of Capricorn and Kerouac’s road novels are autobiographical nature, something I hope to address in a future blog post.

This morning things began extremely well. I awakened at my normal 3 AM and decided to get some chores done. Part of that was to drive all of the garbage down to the dempsty dumpster so that I could dispose of it before it got too hot. It really didn’t work out very well because it was already 2 o’clock when I started out. By the time I was at the dumpster and throwing the garbage bags into it the heat had me nauseated and gasping for breath. I ended up vomiting on myself on one of the new shirts that my mother sent me as a Father’s Day present since we both realize I shall receive no acknowledgment of Father’s Day from my sons.

At the moment any writing is difficult for me with this cat not only in my face but also trying to lick clean.  Little girl has been quite demanding recently—no matter where I am seems that she wants to be also. Maybe that has something to do with my discovering that her belly is quite hard and her nipples swollen so maybe the Kitty Kids population may explode soon!

I hope that you all had a good June 12 –i.e., yesterday.

A Valentine Birthday Chronicle

It's no fun to be ill on one's birthday, Valentine's Day or any other day. However, that's how I spent this morning. Now, a bit after 1:00 p.m., I'm feeling much better and, after a 5-Hour Energy drink, eager to really get on with my special day. Actually, I have been attempting to do that all, morning; however, after falling asleep twice—once at my desk and once while sitting on the commode—I decided to nap in my chair until I was energized enough to not risk falling on the floor. That’s where I am now!

In my yesterday's blog post, Reflections on Being a Valentine Baby, I ended by saying that I have met many very special people during my 67 years journeying through this life and that a few of them were born a Valentine's Day. Two of those people are Facebook friends and I created and posted birthday greetings to them early this morning:

Welsh ex-patriot, Pat Eggleton, who now lives in Sicily

Louisville native, Gabbi Foster

Of course, I have also received quite a few birthday greetings:

from Donna Olsen:

There are other greetings and events I shall chronicle; however, right now I am going to post what I have thus far created and go outside to enjoy the sunshine of this marvelous 54 F Valentine's Day!

I was outside for about an hour, most of the time sitting on my patio, enjoying the sun, and re-reading one of my favorite authors, Jack Kerouac. I then drove down to the mailboxes to check for birthday cards; unfortunately, I took the wrong key-chain (it doesn't have the mailbox key on it), so I shall have to check again tomorrow.

When I returned home, I was exhausted, so I took a 3-hour nap with Alex napping on my legs and Little alternately curled up on my chest/face and leaping down to play with Sugar.

Regarding the kitty kids, Alex spend much of today enjoying the bright and warm sunshine...

Sugar was repeatedly begging/requesting/ kitty cat treats...

and Little Girl was, uh, being Little Girl.

According to Facebook, I received 64 friends posted birthday greeting on my timeline today, plus I received 14 tweets, and, of course, the comments to today's and yesterday's Nick's Bytes posts.

I couldn't locate all of the Facebook posts I supposedly received. Besides the birthday greetings I have posted above, here are the others that I have located:

Well, that's all of my birthday greetings I've been able to find. I hope I've not missed any!

I don't believe anything of unique or of great interest will take place in the 2 hours remaining of my birthday. I plan to enjoy a cup of green tea and a few crackers and cheese until Chelsea Lately comes of TV (the kitty kids and I try never to miss Chelsea). Then,,, who knows? Maybe sleep, maybe playing with kitty kids, etc.

My thanks to all for helping me celebrate my sixty-seventh birthday!

Alex and I say, Bye-bye!

Jack Kerouac and The Dharma Bums

I have been reading and reading the works of Jack Kerouac for about 50 years, ever since I first read On the Road in a Freshman English class at the University of Kentucky. Through those years I have read everything the Kerouac his written, even his less known and popular works such as Maggie Cassidy.

At the moment I am reading The Dharma Bums. In the section of the book I read this morning, Kerouac's Protagonist, Smith, is in the mountains of the U.S. Northwest with his mentor—if I may use that term— Japhy. Although the majority of the novel, like most of Kerouac’s fiction, is reported as dialogue, there are sections of description and observation that touch me to the point that I really wish I were there. Here is one from The Dharma Bums

Once I opened my eyes and saw Japhy sitting there rigid was a rock and I felt like laughing he look so funny. But the mountains were mighty solemn, and so was Japhy, and for that matter so was I, and in fact laughter is solemn.
It was beautiful.  The pinkness vanished and then it was all purple dusk and the roar of the silence was like a wash of diamond waves going through the liquid porches of our ears, enough to soothe a man a thousand years. I prayed for Japhy, for his future safety and happiness and eventual Buddhahood. It was all completely serious, all completely hallucinated, all completely happy.
Yep, I really wish I had been there!

I'm reading The Dharma Bums from The Library of America edition of Kerouac's Road Novels, that also includes On the Road, The Subterraneans, Tristessa, Lonesome Traveler, and selections from  Kerouac's journals.

The version of The Dharma Bums in this volume is the one published by Viking  in 1958.  Kerouac sometimes had conflict with Viking editors, who required him to make changes with which he was not happy, in both On the Road and The Dharma Bums. I would love to read the original version that  Kerouac wrote. I do not believe it is available, although the original, unedited verson of On the Road was published in 2008.

If you are familiar with the "spokesman" of the Beat Generation, let me share with you a treat: Jack Kerouac reading from On the Road, with Steve Allen paying piano in the background.
