I began this series on the Golden Rule by saying that since I was about eight years old, I have tried—not always successfully—to live by the Golden Rule. I have done so because I have always believed that it was the right thing to do. I tell myself that that an altruistic and selfless act is the way to follow Christ. From a theological perspective, I am certain that “Do to others as you would have them do to you” is not a quid pro quo act. I am not to expect something in return for any unselfish act.
But I find that I do want something in return. I hope that others will do unto me as they would have me do unto them. It may be nothing more that a simple acknowledgement—not even a “thank you” is necessary. But it certainly isn’t stealing from me or lying to me in return for the act of kindness that I offer to them.
That may be too much to ask. I don’t know if it is. I’m still working on that question.
It is tough being human, as I know all too well. ec
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that is too much to want.
ReplyDelete“A simple acknowledgement” may be more than some folks can give. I think of all you did for Clair and her kids and she repaid you by destroying your computer. Still, please do stop being who you are. You are a blessing to many people, including me. —Rex
ReplyDeleteMr. Eddie: I agree, being human is tough. Of course, I think you will agree: the alternatives aren’t too great! Even the angels of God are subject to being rebellious.
ReplyDeleteAbby: I suppose so, from my viewpoint. However, from the perspective of some other folks it may be too much.
Azsonofagun: Thank you, Rex. I hope that I shall continue being who I am. I pray that I have not been wounded too often by those to whom I reach out. I remember what one of my right-wing college chums keeps telling me: “A conservative is a liberal who has been mugged.”
