Dan,you gave me a gift I know I can never repay

Dan Fogelberg

August 13, 1951—December 16, 2007

I’ll miss you, Dan. You gave me a gift I know I can never repay.

I thank you for the music and your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness and the times when you got tough
And, Dan, I don't think I said 'I love you' near enough

The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul
My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band

Dan Fogelberg, The Leader of the Band (adapted)

Prayers , memories, and thoughts for Dan may be posted here.

  1. I didn't realize he had passed away.

    It's unfortunate.

  2. Prostate cancer. That's too bad. Eating broccoli is supposed to be good for the prostate. I hope his music and memory will be cherished.

  3. Dan Fogelberg...now there's a name from the past. I didn't realise he had passed on. He was a great musician.

  4. Hadn't heard of him, but this track really moved me so I wish I had. I hope he is at peace and singing with the angels.

  5. He seems to be getting a lot more respect on the internet than he's getting from the print and broadcast media.

  6. Hi Nick ~~ A great loss to the music industry. I read of his passing in the Melbourne Herald-Sun today.
Thank you for letting me know that Robert Doisneau wrote the "Life is short" quote. I did not know that.
Hope you are keeping well and the leg healing. Have a great Christmas and
health and happiness in the 2008.
    Take care, Best Wishes, Merle.

  8. OSWEGAN: I learned of his death from reading other blogs. As Thomas writes below, the media has not said a lot about him.

GORILLA BANANAS: I didn’t know that about broccoli. I suppose I ought to eat some, although since I’ve been living alone I find I eat very few veggies.

PUSS-IN-BOOTS: Yes, a name from the past. I have a few of his CDs, but no turn table on which to play them.

  9. QUEENIE: I’m glad the track could introduce you to Dan. I think he was one of the better singer/song writers around.

THOMAS: I believe you are right: I’ve read/heard little about his death in the media.

    MERLE: Thank you.

ENOLA: The song is one of my favorites, too, along with his song “Run for the Roses.”

  10. I saw it on the news, a great musician.
    A loss for sure.

  11. LITTLE WING: I don’t know if anyone has said this about Dan Fogelberg, but to me his greatness came from being so close to the earth.

    THE LONE BEADER: Thank you.

  12. I used to like "run for the roses". His songs are so detailed you can visualize them when he sings them and relate to them. they tell great stories and are so well written ... in a world filled with instant gratification and no talent, it's always hard to lose one of the Masters.

  14. You did this well, Rev Saint.

I've been able to find a few of his CDs, but not all of the LPs I have.

  15. he'd had a couple of hits before i started really paying attention to him. the song that did it was the song Hard to Say, and I was hearing around this time of year. it made my cry. And the very next day, I looked for the album.

    Lucky at love
    Well, maybe so
    There's still a lot
    of things you'll
    never know
    Like why each time
    the sky begins
    to snow
    You cry...
    You're faithful to her
    In your careless way
    So you miss her when
    she's far away
    But every time you
    think you've
    got it straight
    You fall --
    You face the future
    with a weary
    past
    Those dreams you
    banked upon are
    fading fast
    You know you love
    her but it may
    not last, your fear --
    [ Lyrics found at www.mp3lyrics.org/dHc ]
    It's never easy
    And it's never clear
    Who's to navigate
    And who's to steer
    So you flounder drifting ever
    near the rocks.
It's hard to say where love
    went wrong
It's hard to say just when
It's hard to walk away from
    love
    It may never come again.
You do your best to keep your
    hand in play
And try to keep those lonesome
    blues at bay
    You think you're
    winning but it's
    hard to say sometimes.
It's hard to say where love
    went wrong
It's hard to say just when
It's hard to walk away from
    love
    It may never come again.
    Lucky at love
    Well, maybe so
    There's still a lot
    of things you'll
    never know
    Like why each time
    the sky begins
    to snow
    You cry...
