Creating & Recreating

What locked everyone (including me) out of accessing Nick’s Bytes was the new Blogger blogroll widget that not only linked to other blogs but also provided information about the latest posts on the linked blogs. It was neat! It was also what generated that damned error code that caused Nick’s Bytes to be inaccessible.

I worked many hours creating the 162 blog links on that new Blogger blogroll widget. However, the first thing I did when I was again able to access the Layout of Nick’s Bytes was to delete that pesky widget. And I am very glad that I did!

My plan was to create new blog dedicated exclusively to links to the superb blogs that I (try to) read on a regular basis. I figured if anything went wrong with that blog, it would not affect Nick’s Bytes. It was a correct assumption.

Thus, I created a new blog, St. Nick’s Splendid Blog Roll and began reentering the 162 blog links that had been on Nick’s Bytes…using the new Blogger blogroll widget. That was a big mistake! I had only entered about twenty of the 162 blogs when—yep, you guessed it!—that horrible Blogger error code appeared and I was unable to access St. Nick’s Splendid Blog Roll.

No problem—except for the time I had spent creating access St. Nick’s Splendid Blog Roll! I deleted the new blog—and created another access St. Nick’s Splendid Blog Roll. This time I am not using that blasted new Blogger blogroll widget!

The new blog is just at its beginning; however, you may access it (I hope) HERE.

Are You Addicted to Alex?

If you, like many, are addicted or at least appreciate the furball who owns me, you no longer have to wait my deciding to post something about Alex the Kat. As you may or may not know, Alex has (and has had for quite a while) his own blog: Alexicon: A Kitty Kat’s Life with his Hoomin. (I am the “hoomin”).

You may remember that you, my readers, are the ones who convinced me (after a lot of politicking by the furball) to allow Alex to have his own blog:

Remember?

Alex has been posting some neat stuff (if I do say so myself) on this, his second blog. You may access Alexicon: A Kitty Kat’s Life with his Hoomin HERE.

Oxygen and Me

I think I have worked out something about increasing my allotment of tanked oxygen. I fear I must be re-tested by VA to “determine (my) need.”

I really do not want to go through that again, but the “regulations” require it if the VA is going to adjust how much oxygen I may have each month.

P.S. ~ After responding to the comments to date, I have decided to add a bit about my philosophy of life:

  1. Oh my, you have had some problems, haven't you, Nick? That's why I'm reluctant to do anything to change my blog from the standard template I used when I set it up.

I haven't been over to see Alex for a while; I must call in on him.

And I really hope your oxygen gets sorted to your satisfaction soon.

  2. Hi Nick
Sorry to hear you've had further problems with the blogroll widget ... I had only about a dozen or so when it seized up my original blog. Good thinking to set up a "bloglink" blog.

I now follow my favourite blogs on Bloglines (which I'd never heard of until you mentioned it on the Blogger help forum)

Hope you get your oxygen allotment sorted.

    Best wishes. Sandie

  3. Liz: Thank you. Say ‘hi’ to my furball; again this morning he is outside cattin’ around.

dancingonabladeofgrass: I’m glad you’ve had no further blog troubles. Sandie. That experience with the unknown error code was more than enough for me. I’m sorry you had to go through it, too, but I appreciate the correspondence we had as we awaited Blogger getting rid of the code.

  4. Glad you got your 'puter troubles sorted, Nick. I've got that blogroll thingy and every now and again it reverts to the original, totally weird.

Hope the oxygen re-evaluation goes well...and that you get your allotted amount.

  5. Puss-in-Boots: Thank you! I wish the blogroll widget would have reverted back to the earlier version on Nick’s Bytes rather than locking up the blog.

  6. A truly valiant effort at hosting a blogroll, my friend.

Good luck with the oxygen re-testing. Good thing that there are such stiff regulations. Heaven forbid someone have too much oxygen so they can go out into the world and enjoy themselves on a regular basis! (Did someone wake up on the sarcastic side of the bed this morning?)

  7. GACK! I know that you've learned to navigate the requirements of the VA, but every time I read about the hoops you must jump through I get just a little more frustrated!

  8. Wow-- the government's now regulated how much you get to breathe! I'm glad you're getting it all sorted out.

Your blog fiasco sounds horrendous! Glad you're getting it all sorted out though. This is why I'm afraid to change anything on mine. So glad you learned from the experience, and that things are getting better!

Carol: You know, I think my rather extensive blog roll is an important part of Nick’s Bytes. Many times I have added a blog to it and later found that other readers of Nick’s Bytes are suddenly commenting on that blog. It may be egotistical of me, but I believe that through the years I have introduced many bloggers to each other via Nick’s Bytes blogroll.

As for being sarcastic regarding the VA and my oxygen, I believe I am sarcastic, too—and a bit cynical!

Dana: Ack! I know what you mean; however, as a former military person, Dana, you know that jumping through the hoops that reulations require servers an important purpose: to build the character of the jumper! Right?

MB: I think the government regulates much more of our lives that we know—or care to know—about! If I couldn’t laugh at the absurdity of life, I’d spend much more time than I do feeling sad and even shit upon!

I believe it’s the same way with blogging: it can be a wonderful and enjoyable experience and then, whe for example Blogger pulls the rug out from under one’s feet, you gotta smile and sing:

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
    Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
    If life seems jolly rotten
    There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
    Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.
And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
    For life is quite absurd
    And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.
So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath
    Life's a piece of shit
    When you look at it
    Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
    You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
    (Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
    What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...

  11. mjgolch: Be careful with that widget! I still subscribe to the Google help group in which I and Sandie (see above) discussed our problem with that error code and that informed Google about the error code. Today another blogger reported the error code has prevented him to accessing his blog, just as it did us.

  12. I'm glad you're working out getting more oxygen. It is a tough habit to kick and in this case, I really think you should stick to it.

  13. I am SO glad that you got things worked out with your blog. That just seemed like a nightmare, to have it unaccessible to you.

I LOVE Alex. Just adore him. His blog is one of the best out there. I am posting a 6 quirks meme this week with an open tag. Would love to see what Alex would do with a meme!!

I am going to see him when I leave here of course.

Take care Nick, and seriously, I am SO glad things are better with your blog.

    Be blessed.

    Jen

  14. Phishez_Rule: Yes, breathing does become a bit habitual. I hope to continue for some time to come.

Jen: Thank you. I must admit that there were times as I awaited Blogger trying to discover the problem that caused that error code that I saw my hope dim; but now it feels great to be back to normal.

Alex appreciates your visits to his blog and your comments. He did have to ask me what the word “eloquent” that you wrote in your comment means. I told him and he purred.
