Having recently completed the 1,000th Blog Post celebration, the next in line for Nick’s Bytes is the 100,000th Visitor. As of this writing, the visitor thingie (on my sidebar) reads 99,535. If visitors come by as usual, that means that visitor Number 100,000 will be by within the next week.
Please take a glance at the visitor thing and, if you turn out to be the 100,000th visitor, please tell me about it in a comment to Nick’s Bytes or in an email. Thanks.
What dreadful hot weather we have! It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance. ~ Jane Austen
SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
My father picked up this phrase while he was in the army in
It’s hotter than a French whore on a feather mattress.
Well, I don’t know about that analogy because I have experienced neither. However, I do know that I am staying inside today and so is the furball, whether A1ex likes it or not!
It is too hot outside for human or kitty cat!
Don't knock the weather; nine-tenths of the people couldn't start a conversation if it didn't change once in a while. ~ Anonymous
Too hot for man or beast. I believe the temp was 97 here on Monday but we did have a little cloud cover - Tuesday is supposed to be 101. I will have to get my outside stuff done early or not at all. ec
ReplyDeleteOh poor you and Alex! I'd be inside with you. I love the Austen quote!
ReplyDeleteYikes, I've long since forgotten how hot it gets in the States, particularly the South. And I was complaining about the cold here today! Way to stay cool with Alex there, Nick, hope that heat wave breaks soon.
ReplyDeleteKeep cool you two!
ReplyDeleteI rather like your father's turn of a phrase. I must remember it.
ReplyDeleteI see you are rapidly closing in one your visitor number 100,000!
That song with Bing and Louis brings back some good memories.
ReplyDeleteIt's not fit outside for Man nor Beast. Think about where that more or less came from... Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer I believe. Think of all the snow, the abominable snow man, the blizzard, etc.
ReplyDeleteLast night when it was time to go to bed I could not believe it was 79 in the house. This morning it was much better, it was 78. I do not sleep well until it is 72 or cooler. Yea, the weather is cooperating and it should make it to the lower 60s today in Michigan. If you want I will see if I can drop ship you some nice weather.
You and Alex be careful and make sure to get plenty of fluids.
I keep the AC going for my 2 kitties so they are comfie, but they are housecats. Me, I have to go out in it!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't see the mark on your counter. 1000 posts. I think I am up to 340.
I probably should post more, but I often don't have much to say and then when I do, I just go on....
How true that we couldn't start a conversation if the weather didn't change once in awhile. In fact, I don't think the weather has to change at all in order for it to be a conversation starter.
ReplyDeleteI'm remembering my grandfather's birthday notes to me, written inside a religious birthday card. I only heard from him once a year. In his notes, he always reported the recent weather as if he had been keeping some kind of log of temps and rainfall amounts.
Take it easy today, Nick.
Mr Eddie: I agree. Using the morning for out-of-doors activities is best when the heat gets that high. Watching the temperatures this summer, I’ve recognized that they generally reach their apex about 3:00 p.m. and remain high until after midnight. It seems that cooling evenings are no longer around.
ReplyDeleteLiz: Yep! Inside is best. I encountered that Austen quote bay chance a while back and added it to my list “for possible future use.” It seems that that future use has occurred.
Brooksie: Yep, heat with the intense humidity found in this Ohio River Valley can literally be a killer. As for Alex, I let the furball outside about 4:30 a.m. so he could cat around a bit before the nasty heat arrives. It is now almost 11:00 a.m. and, even though I have called him from both doorways several times, the minx of a cat hasn’t appeared. Thankfully, the temperature is now only 86 F, but it is climbing fast.
Sometimes Alex worries me with his cattish independence.
Fiochra: Thank you. I am keeping cool; as for Alex, see above.
ReplyDeleteThe Toff: My father did use colorful phrases—lots of ‘em, sometime too often (at least from my Victorian-like mother).
Bobcat: Yes, I think that’s a neat song. And thanks for commenting on it; I often suspect that no one listens to those songs—except me, of course.
Barman: Thank you for the idea: I shall think COLD today!
I, too, have noticed that the heat seems to hang around these days. I think, but am not sure, that that is a change from my youth. I remember sitting on the porch with my parents when I was a wee kid to cool off in the evenings. Now it seems that the evenings just don’t cool off.
Wow. You have had a lot of visitors to your blog!
ReplyDeleteEnemy of the Republic: Cats, especially house cats, need the comfort of AC, even when we humans have to go out. Now, if I could just convince my furball to come back in before it gets really hot outside!
ReplyDeleteThe visitor counter is rising fast. At the moment it reads 99,599. I suspect that #100,000 will arrive in the next two or three days!
As for posting more, I think that your posts are uniformly interesting, informative, and—considering the comments—quite consciousness raising. Sometimes, such as today’s post, mine a fluff!
Carol: I wish I had a dime for every conversation I have had in which the weather was mentioned! Then this enforced retirement I am experiencing would be much more comfortable! I might even afford to replace my old car!
It seems that the weather gave your grandfather something to write about in those birthday cards. Some level within me feels that that is a shame: kids, especially on their birthdays, really don’t care about someone else’s weather.
I have just called Alex from both front and back doors again. The furball is still either too far away to hear me or, most likely, is ignoring me. I assume he will return soon for his 3rd meal of the day—i.e., lunch.
The Lone Beader: I suppose the visitors average about 25,000 a year, with most of then showing up to peruse Monday’s jokes.
ReplyDeleteIt was 104 here yesterday. It's not enough just to keep the plants watered these days- we've had to stake out some umbrellas and fabric to shield them from the sun.
ReplyDeleteStay cool and well hydrated, both of you.
ReplyDeletePop into the Cafe it is voting time on the Photo contest.
I'm missing the hot weather of the Greek Islands, now I'm back in rainy England.
ReplyDeleteStay cool Nick...we just got done breaking records for continual heat.
ReplyDeleteUGH.
You're right...It's just so hot! I hope you and your kitten are doing good.. I'm sleepy today, probably because of the sun and the heat...... Try to stay cool!
ReplyDeleteWell we British talk about the weather continually - mainly because 2 days here are never alike!
ReplyDeleteAt the moment we have had rain, rain, rain and more rain.....
Now how can we do a swap?
Open all the windows and doors and sit naked so that any slight breeze cools ya nethers LOL......
ReplyDelete(((Saintly)))) please make sure you drink PLENTY......
much love
x
As a follow up: The furball came inside finally at bout 1:00 p.m., [primarily because of very short thunderstorm hit us and you know how Alex feels about “nassy water.” He has been inside alternately hassling me and napping since then.
ReplyDeleteThomas: 104? Was that dry or humid heat? Farming and gardening is much less fun in that kind of weather.
Sassy Mama Bear: We’ve been doing that. At least I have; Alex doesn’t like to even drink water and I am not giving him a beer! I just got on the compute, so I’ll be right over to vote.
Akelamalu: Greece to New England can be quite a change! I think I would enjoy a trip to the Greek islands about now.
Tug: Those are not the kind of records I find nice to break! I hope you are keeping cool, too.
I agree- way to hot for human or beast and this weather makes me a beastly human for sure!
ReplyDeleteMississippi Songbird: Heat does make one sleep. At least it makes Alex and I sleepy. We both napped much of the afternoon.
ReplyDeletedancingonabladeofgrass: I’d love to swap for a while. I understand that in London the weather is either fog or rain. Is that correct?
Marmite Toasty : Both Alex and I stay naked as much as possible in the house. Of course, every once in a while I must open the door (presently for people handing out political stuff and taking polls) so I keep a robe close by. Alex just stays naked in his fur.
Professor! Grand to see you! I must drop by and say hello soon! As I’ve been indoors almost all day today, the heat hasn’t made me feel beastly; however the furball sticking his claws into me has given me some rather beastly feelings. I have even considering trimming Alex’s claws.
ReplyDeleteAlex looks so forlorn in that picture!
