Wednesday Coffeehouse: Carly Simon

Daughter of Simon & Schuster, Inc. co-founder, Richard Simon, Carly Simon grew up with music in her home. Her dad played classical music on the piano; her mom, Andrea Louise Simon, was a singing civil rights activist.

Carly first hit the music charts in the mid-‘60s with a minor hit she sang with her sister, Lucy called Winkin’, Blinkin’, and Nod. In the early ‘70s she hit the charts on her own with That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be. Shortly thereafter she married fellow singer/songwriter, James Taylor.

Carly has won numerous awards, including Grammy Awards for her debut album, Carly Simon, Boys In The Trees, In Harmony (A Sesame Street Record), and Let The River Run. She won an Academy Award and a Golden Globes Award for Let The River Run.

Without further words, I introduce to you one of my favorite artists, Carly Simon, singing some of my—hey! It is my coffeehouse!—songs.

  2. I love your posts about singers of my younger years, Nick. I particularly like Carly Simon...one very talented lady. And I just loooove James Taylor's music. too. They were a good pair of musicians.

  3. Carly is great. I once read that she struggles with horrible stage fright - I can't imagine how anyone so talented could feel that way.

  4. I'm coming to look forward to your Wednesday coffee house as much as I do your Monday jokes!

    Thank you, Saint Nick.

  5. Daffy: I like Anticipation, too. So, for you and me, I have put it as the Song in my Mind at the top of the sidebar.

Puss-in-Boots: The singers and songs sure bring back memories, don’t they? James Taylor and Carly Simon were one of the most talented couples I remember. Too bad they divorced, but…”that’s life.”

Auburn Haired Artist: Stage fright can strike so many people, some of whom I would never suspect. Like, I read that Barbara Streisand vomits before every stage performance.

China Girl: Thank you! Considering the large difference between the numbers of my Monday visitors and Wednesday visitors, that is quite a compliment!

    Carol: Yes, Carly!

  6. Mike G: I inadvertently deleted your comment when I deleted my own double post. Sorry. Thanks for joining in the Coffeehouse!

  13. Andi: I am delighted to have introduced you to Carly Simon.

Just Me: I too have read Carly Simon wrote You’re So Vain about James Taylor. I have also heard it rumoured that the person she really wrote it about was Warren Beatty based upon the verse:

You had me several years ago
When I was still quite naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me.

I guess Carly is the only one who can tell us!

Jay Are: You are very welcome! I really appreciate it when folks say that what I do on the blog is pleasing to them.
