In the Fall of the Year…

At the autumnal equinox (Sept 22, 2008; 11:44:18 A.M. EDT), the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator, from north to south; this marks the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.

Autumn Wind

by Wu-ti (157-87 B.C.)

Autumn wind rises: white clouds fly.
Grass and trees wither: geese go south.
Orchids all in bloom: chrysanthemums smell sweet.
I think of my lovely lady: I never can forget.
Floating-pagoda boat crosses Fen River.
Across the mid-stream white waves rise;
Flute and drum keep time to sound of rowers' song;
Amidst revel and feasting, sad thoughts come;
Youth's years how few! Age how sure!

[Translated by Arthur Waley (1889-1966)]

Climate plays a deciding role when determining the appropriate tree planting time. Newly planted trees do best when exposed to moderate temperature and rainfall; they need time to root and acclimatize before the onset of intense heat and dryness of summer or the freezing temperatures of winter.

Time to Plant Trees

Time to plant trees

You’re down on your knees

Time to plant trees

Near a swarm of bees

You plant a little tree

And it may grow and grow

Or it may die in winter’s snow

Only God does know.

[Award winning poem by Sometimes Saintly Nick, age 9 years]

  2. The Forever Autumn video is beautiful. This time of year, I always think of Justin Hayward singing a different Forever Autumn. (And I would link to it here if I was more computer adept.) Even though the words had nothing to do with my life at the time the song was playing on the radio - I was pregnant with my daughter then - I loved it because of its beauty and because of Hayward's sweet voice. The song reflects the melancholy that comes for me during this time of falling leaves.

    Your poem, written at 9, is great! Pretty amazing, actually, that you at that age recognized that our actions and intentions don't always guarantee things will happen as we planned.

    Thank you, Nick.

  7. Hello Nick and Alex,

    That fall pic is gorgeous!! It's gotten chilly here and the leaves are starting to change. I don't like it, but at least it's colorful. ;)

    Hope you are both well. I voted for an Alex pic, although it was tough, they are all so darn handsome!

  8. We think that is a very good poem to have been written by a 9 year old.
