Memorial Day Celebration, 2012

Here in the U.S. of A. we now celebrate certain holidays on Monday no matter what day of the week the real holiday occurs. So, for us Americans today is a holiday and tomorrow is the first day of the work week. (You understand this weirdness, don't you?)

Here at Nick's Bytes I post the Memorial Day celebration in place of the normal Too Bad It's Monday jokes and humor, which I shall post tomorrow as Too Bad It's Tuesday jokes and humor.

This print hangs on the wall before my desk--lest I forget:

Songs for Memorial Day

It's not easy being a veteran:

I have posted this song, Canadian Terry Kelly's A Pittance of Time, in Nick's Bytes Memorial Day and Veterans Day posts for about the past 6 or so years.

In Green Fields of France (a.k.a. No Man's Land) , Eric Bogle visits a World War cemetary and rests beside the tombstome of Willy McBride

When Johnny Comes Marching Home came out of the United States Civil War. It celebrated the hope for end of hostilities. The song was sung in both the Union and Confederate states, with different verses, of course. This is one of the Union versions:

Kin to When Johnny Comes Marching Home is the Irish song, Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye. This song is less celebratory: it deals with the reality and horror of war.

Another Eric Bogle song of the First World War; this one tells the story of one Australian solider at the horrible 3 month battle of Gallipoli on the Turkish coast.

Every night 67.000 U.S. Veterans are homeless

Before this 2012 Memorial Day ends, my I recommend that you visit THIS SITE for a very unique moment.

  1. Excellent, Rev Saint. This one even touched my cynical heart.

  2. A bittersweet post, Nick. It touched me, too. It touched me a lot.
