Approaching My First Blog Anniversary

My first blog post was entitled I’m New at This—Kinda and was posted almost a year ago: May 6, 2005. I suppose that means that I am approaching my one year anniversary as a blogger. According to Blogger, I have made 393 blogs posts, not counting today. For those who are into statistics, that breaks down to 1.0826446280991735537190082644628 posts per day.

I haven’t avoided blogging about the successes and failures in my life, even though a primary concern in my family origin has always been “what will the neighbors think.” I have, however, learned from my blogging experiences. Therefore , all of those posts no longer exist: I removed several when an unscrupulous dude used the content of some of them to compose an anonymous letter to someone who was once a dear friend. I deleted others when their personal revelations caused uproar in my family of origin.

Some of my blog posts have addressed contemporary issues, from religious fundamentalism to incest. Others have chronicled my life with Alex, the cat who owns me. Since early in my blogging experience I’ve posted hundreds of jokes that people have sent to me. One of what I consider the best series of blog posts I have made was the story of the tank accident that took place when I was a green army officer serving in Germany. (Several people have emailed me and requested that I re-post the chapters in that series in one blog post. I have not done this because of the length of such a post. However, as part of my one year anniversary as a blogger, I shall post the whole story in one enormous blog post tomorrow).

As I have reflected upon this year of blogging—not only on my own writing but also the blogs of the many blogger friends I have made (see "Good Blogs" in the sidebar at the right)—I have concluded that blogging can be fun and beneficial, especially if one has the attitude of The Eleventh Commandment: Thy Shall Not Take Thyself Seriously.

  1. I have been blogging for a few years now and I so understand the whole family/friends "OMIGOD" reaction to some things.

Now i have a disclaimer - If you have a problem, it's your problem - and I don't use any real names. That being said, I still doubt my mother would like to read it.

Congrats on your one year blogoversary
