The Cell Phone Meme

I haven't responded to a meme ia a very long time, but when I saw this one created by Mimi the Queen of Memes, I had to do it. I find cells phones and their kindred thingies to be... well, just read my responses in this meme:

1. How important is a cell phone in UR life?
Not important at all! I only own one in case of emergencies, such as my car breaks down so I can call AAA or I fall so I can call 911.
2. R U addicted to UR cell phone?
Definitely not!
3. R U a texter, an emailer, or a photo sender?
I have never in my life written a text or emailed from a cell phone or taken/sent a photo.
4. In the normal course of a day, about how many times do U touch UR cell phone?
Maybe once. I usually have the damned thing turned off unless I have given that number to someone such as the Direct TV dude who is now in my apartment,
5. R U guilty of distracted driving?
No! I never turn the damned thing on when I am driving.
6. What is the 1 app never invented that needs to be made for UR cell phone?
Something to block all incoming text messages and all but callers authorized by me.
7. What annoys U the most about cell phones these days?
Other than that they exist, it's looking in my car's mirror and seeing the driver of the car behind me talking on a cell phone as the car speeds toward the rear of my car.

The Wisdom At 21 Meme

This meme has been sitting in my files for quite a while. I decided to finally do and post it because the snow is still falling outside.

The Wisdom At 21 Meme

1. Find the nearest bookshelf of your favorite reads, cookbooks, tech books, magazines. It doesn't matter. This will work for all print media. If you don't have seven books lined up on a shelf, grab the first seven you see around the house.
2. Book #1: Turn to page 21. Read the 21st sentence (you may have to turn the page).
Write it down.
3. Do the same with the first seven books or articles you see. The sentences will make a paragraph. You must write them down in the order you found them. 4. When you are finished, read over your "story" and title it.
5. Show us your bibliography at the end of this meme. Hmmm...I wonder if we'll be surprised at the reading material we may find.

They both seemed more sophisticated to us, so we thought we should bring these two sophistications together. My heart was with him always, but my values ultimately led me back home. "Whooee, here we go!" yelled a kid in a baseball cap, and they gunned up the truck to seventy and passed everybody on the road. And I cried for Alcatraz in your dumb hollows O tower clenching my Pan's foot with vivid hoard of Dannemora. Moloch whose poverty is the specter of genius! If I had a Green Automobile I'd go find my old companion in his house on the Western ocean. There was plenty of mad action, senseless destruction, orgies, brawls, perversions and a strange parade of innocent victims that, even on paper and in careful police language, was enough to test the credulity of the dullest police reported.

Productive Days & a Neat Meme

Wednesday was a long and productive day.

My physician, Claudette, came by my house at 9:30 AM and was so excited about the progress I have made toward good health that she literally danced around my living room! I am now off of another prescription drug! I am walking much better, although I still need to carry a walking stick, "just in case." I almost jumped up and joined Claudette in her dance!

Wednesday also brought me Cassandra, who is replacing Tasha as my homemaker/health aide. Cassandra and I didn't get off to a happy start: she made several invalid complaints, such as that my oven doesn't work. It does, but she did not pre-heat it before she put the fish in to bake. Her complaint not only had me checking the fully functioning stove for a non-existent problem, but I ended up eating fried fish, which is not what I wanted or need to eat.

Thursday I was alone. I liked that! I also baked some corn bread to prove that there is nothing wrong with my oven. I really liked that! The corn bread is yummy!

The day ended with my completing a really neat MEME that Carol placed on Facebook. The instructions are simple:
Here are the rules: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen books you've read that will always stick with you. They don't have to be the greatest books you've ever read, just the ones that stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes. Copy these instructions and tag 10 (or more) friends, including me—because I'm interested in seeing what books are in your head.

Unfortunately, I didn't obey the first instruction. I found it hard to limit myself to fifteen books that have always stuck with me. I kept removing and adding books for half an hour, until I finally forced my self to accept the list as complete. Below is the list that I published:
  • THE BIBLE (NRSV translation)
  • MEN OF IRON by Howard Pyle
  • EXODUS by Leon Uris
  • THE PEACEFUL WARRIOR by Dan Millman
  • SIDDHARTHA by Herrmann Hesse
  • AWARENESS by Anthony de Mellow
  • ARE YOU RUNNING WITH ME, JESUS? by Malcolm Boyd
  • FIRE IN THE BELLY by Sam Keen
  • ON THE ROAD by Jack Kerouac
  • DUBLINERS by James Joyce
  • MARX AND THE BIBLE by Jose Miranda
  • IRON JOHN by Robert Bly
  • HYMNS TO AN UNKNOWN GOD by Sam Keen
  • THE GIVING TREE by Shel Silverstein
  • GONZO by Hunter S Thompson
If I had been required to list 150 books, the task would have been much easier!

A Question about Cat Behavior

Alex is the first cat to have owned me. I have been the master of many dogs, but I have learned that dog and cat behavior is very different.

For example, when I would offer any of my dogs a doggie treat, it would be out of my hand and into the dog’s mouth in a fraction of second. It was usually literally woofed down and the canine would be begging for a second treat.

It isn’t like that with Alex! Alex refuses to accept a cat treat—even his favorites—from my hand. He wants to place them before him on the table or my (our) desk. Furthermore, he doesn’t want me to just haphazardly put them down; he wants me to line them up, side-by-side, so that the can eat them one at a time without moving from where he is sitting. I do not understand his behavior.

Also, Alex never begs for treats—or anything else.

7 (More) Things that I Don’t Think You Know About Me

Jessica tagged me, so here goes:

  • I once wrote a (very long) rap song and used it as a sermon. I can remember no parts of it.

  • When I was two years old I had a nasty reaction to sulfa drugs and have been listing it as an allergy all of my life. Dr. Mike prescribed me a medication that contains sulfa. I hesitated taking it until I checked out all of the possible reactions. Monday I made the leap; this far I have had no adverse reaction. Therefore, I do not believe that, after 60 years, I am still allergic to sulfa.

  • When I was in high school the baseball coach nick-named me “Triple-Temple” because I hit more triples than anyone else on the team.

  • My maternal relatives “force fed” me when I was a child. My grandmother supposedly said “Skinny babies die” and my mother and aunts then took it  upon themselves to make me eat. They would, for example, hold my nose closed and when I opened my mouth to breathe, put a spoonful of whatever in it and hold my mouth shut until I swallowed it. I have had problems with obesity since I was 5 years old.

  • When I was about 15, a buddy named Ted and I won the Louisville Junior Doubles Bowling Tournament. I misplaced the trophy many years ago.

  • Alex has recently developed the habit of sitting in front of my computer until I bribe him with kitty treats to move to another part of my desk.

  • I had my tonsils removed twice. The first time was by traditional surgery. When the tonsils grew back, they were “burned out” using x-ray treatments. That is (thank God) a procedure no longer used. Because it was used on me, I must have a thyroid scan done every five years due to the possibility of developing thyroid cancer.

Please take a glance at the visitor thing and, if you turn out to be the 100,000th visitor, please tell me about it in a comment to Nick’s Bytes or in an email. Thanks.

Six Unspectacular Quirks of Sometimes Saintly Nick

Pink got tagged to do a MEME. Pink advised me to sit on ice to keep cool just before she tagged me to do the same MEME. Therefore, with a cool ass, I can get my overheated brain in gear and offer you these simple eccentricities for your erudition and amusement:

Six Unspectacular Quirks of Sometimes Saintly Nick

  • My favorite color is green: at the moment I am sitting in room (my library) painted green, wearing green shorts (no shirt: it’s too damned hot for a shirt), with a green candle (which is not lighted because it is too damned hot in here) beside me on my desk.

  • I seldom allow others to know how intelligent I am or how much I really comprehend about something; as Sun Tzu suggested in The Art of War, I always keep some wisdom in reserve, just in case.

  • I am an extremely easy mark, willing to give my last dollar to someone who claims to be in need, even when my gut tells me that I am being conned.

  • I always sleep in the nude, no matter how cold the temperature is.

  • I enjoy driving around and getting myself lost: I have discovered some really neat places and people while lost and I relish the challenge of getting myself un-lost.

  • I have more books than will ever fit on my bookshelves—and I have read all of them.

And I wish I knew how
It would feel to be free
I wish that I could break
All the chains holding me
I wish I could say
All the things that I’d like to say
Say ’em loud say ’em clear
For the whole round world to hear
I wish I could share
All the love that’s in my heart
Remove every doubt
It keeps us apart
And I wish you could know
What it means to be me
Then you’d see and agree
Every man should be free

I wish I could live

Like I’m longin’ to live
I wish I could give
What I’m longin’ to give
And I wish I could do
All the things I’d like to do
You know they’ll still miss part of you
Yes sir...
And I’m way way over due

I wish I could be like a bird up in the sky
How sweet it would be
If I found out I could fly
So long to my song
And look down upon ihe sea
And I sing because I know
I would see you
I sing because I know
I would see you
And I sing because I know
I would see you
To be free yea
